Michael Chopra hopes to return to play in a better and improved Indian Super League, which will kick off on October 3, organisers have announced.

The former Newcastle and Sunderland striker turned out in last year's ISL for the Sachin Tendulkar co-owned Kerala Blasters, who were runners-up to Atletico Kolkata in the final of the league's inaugural edition.

World Cup winners Alessandro Del Piero, David Trezeguet and Joan Capdevila were among the players that took part last year and Chopra - whose father is Indian - admits he would welcome a return to Kerala.

"The idea is still to go back to India. I want to play in the Super League again and hopefully that will sort itself out," Chopra told Sky Sports.

"I lost in the final with Kerala last year but hopefully I can go that step further this time round and win the trophy.

"Of course, it's a possibility I could return to Kerala because I really enjoyed my time there, but you never know in football until the contract is in front of you.

"The lads were all great there and I got on really well with the owners including Sachin. My main concern is to play in the Super League next year and if that is with Kerala, then I'll be happy."

The opening match of this year's ISL sees Marco Materazzi's Chennaiyin host defending champions Atletico Kolkata, who are co-owned by former India Test captain Sourav Ganguly.

Delhi Dynamos travel to FC Goa on October 4 and a day later Mumbai City host FC Pune in the Mahrashtra derby.

More than 1.5m fans attended games last year making the ISL the fourth best attended league in the world behind the German Bundesliga, the Premier League and La Liga.

This year’s schedule has been extended by nine days and will feature 61 matches across 79 days with the final taking place on December 20 at a venue to be confirmed.
