Chesterfield rebuff Roberts bid

Chesterfield have turned down an offer from Portsmouth for midfielder Gary Roberts.

The Spireites confirmed they have refused a bid for Roberts, who played a key role in the club's quest for promotion for League One this season. Former Chesterfield boss Paul Cook left to take charge of Pompey two days after the Spireites were beaten in the play-off semi-finals by Preston earlier this month. Roberts, 31, joined Chesterfield on a free transfer from Swindon in the summer of 2013 and has made a total of 89 appearances for the club. He was voted Sky Bet League Two Player of the Year last season after helping the Spireites win promotion.
