James McClean has declared himself fit for the Republic of Ireland's European Qualifier against Poland but Everton midfielder Darron Gibson has been forced to pull out.

Wigan winger McClean was sent for a scan on an ankle injury on Tuesday, raising concerns he might miss Sunday's Dublin qualifier against the Group D leaders.

But he was confident of featuring even if the injury prevents him training for the rest of the week, when asked if he would recover in time, McClean said: "Oh, 100 per cent, yes.

"It's been positive news, just plenty of rest, plenty of ice and I should be ready to go. You'd have to chop my foot off otherwise.

"I'm fine. It's a bit sore, but it's just bone bruising. A couple of days' rest and it should be fine."

However, Gibson has returned to his club to undergo treatment on a persistent groin injury while late call-up, Burnley left-back Stephen Ward (ankle), was Ireland's other injury doubt.

McClean, who admitted he was concerned when he was forced to curtail his involvement earlier in the week, sat out once again as manager Martin O'Neill put the players through their paces at the Aviva Stadium on Wednesday morning.

More from European Qualifiers

Asked if he was concerned, McClean said: "I was, yes, because I didn't remember getting a kick or going over on it, and obviously that's the worrying part. In pre-season, I did my other ankle, so that was kind of on my mind.

"But I went for the scan and it came back positive and I'm happy with how it came back. Like I say, it's just plenty of ice and it should be okay.

"I spoke to the medical staff and we agreed that it was best just to give it that extra 24, 48 hours extra rest. The game is not until Sunday."
