Inter Milan have offered Monaco's Jeremy Toulalan a three-year contract in the region of two million euros a season, according to Italian sports TV channel, Rai Sport.
The 31-year-old is available on a free in the summer and the Serie A giants are firm favourites to sign the defensive midfielder.
News of Inter's interest will come as a bitter blow to Newcastle, who have been linked with a move for the former Nantes, Lyon and Malaga star.
New Inter head coach Roberto Mancini is keen to bolster his squad this summer, although his side are currently struggling in the league - 10 points off third spot and Champions League qualification.
However, the Nerazzurri are through to the last-16 of the Europa League where they face German side Wolfsburg in a two-legged tie later this month.
