Norwich boss Alex Neil will not rush Lewis Grabban back after the striker had successful ankle surgery on Thursday.

Grabban had scored five goals in as many games to help the Canaries reel off a run of six successive wins in the Sky Bet Championship.

But he missed Wednesday's home reverse to Wigan with an ankle injury, with the club confirming afterwards he required an operation.

Speaking to the media at Colney on Friday morning, Neil said: "The surgery was a success but he is going to be out for the next little while.

"In terms of a putting a timeline on it we are not going to do that because it depends how quickly he recovers and we don't want to rule him in or out given how long we have left in the season.

"We just want to give him the best opportunity to get back before the end and have an impact for us. It was his ankle, he had a bit of his cartilage that needed to be repaired but it was relatively straightforward so he is fine."

Neil also confirmed Luciano Becchio is unlikely to come into his plans despite Grabban's absence.

The Argentinian has made just 16 appearances for City since joining from Leeds in January 2013 and netted from the penalty spot for the Under-21s in the defeat to Porto in the Premier League International Cup in midweek.

But Neil added: "No, I don't think Luc will come into my thoughts at the moment. He hasn't played nearly any football in quite a bit of time so to get up to speed in the first team and make an impact would be tough."
