Borussia Moenchengladbach have announced that midfielder Granit Xhaka has signed a contract extension until 2019, with the option of a further year.

The 22-year-old Swiss international signed for Gladbach from FC Basel in 2012 and has gone on to make 65 Bundesliga appearances.

He had initially agreed a deal until 2016 but has now committed his long-term future to the club.

"In these two and a half years Granit has made great strides and become one of the most important players of our team," Gladbach sports director Max Eberl told the club's official website.

"We're excited that we have been able to keep him here for the next few years."

Xhaka said: "I feel comfortable at Borussia and am in my third season here. Therefore, there was never any doubt that I would extend my contract. I'm proud and happy to be able to play for Borussia in the future."

Gladbach are third in the Bundesliga, seven points behind second-placed Wolfsburg.
