Transfer news: Powell returns to Manchester United early from loan to Leicester

England U21 international Nick Powell has returned to Manchester United halfway through a loan spell to Leicester City.

The forward only played three times for Leicester - coming off the bench each time for Foxes manager Nigel Pearson, most recently in December's 1-0 defeat to Manchester City.

Powell joined Leicester on a season-long loan on transfer deadline day last summer but only clocked up 40 minutes of playing time for the Foxes.

The 20-year-old was signed for Manchester United by Sir Alex Ferguson in 2012 from Crewe and scored a 20-yard scorcher on his Premier League debut in a 4-0 win over Wigan at Old Trafford.

He made six appearances for United in that 2012/13 season, including two Champions League group stage games.

But the following season, David Moyes sent him on loan to Wigan, where he scored 12 goals in 41 games, and, after starting for United in their chastening 4-0 Capital One Cup defeat at Milton Keynes Dons, he was loaned to Leicester, where he also made several appearances for the Foxes' U21 team.
