Premier League: James Ward-Prowse back in Southampton squad but no date for Jay Rodriguez return

James Ward-Prowse is back in training and will be part of Southampton's squad for their next two matches.

The teenage midfielder has been recuperating since suffering a broken foot during Saints' Premier League win at Swansea on September 20.

And he will be one of 22 players who travel north for Saturday's game at Burnley and the Capital One Cup quarter-final at Sheffield United three days later.

Southampton boss Ronald Koeman said: "James Ward-Prowse is back in training with the group. He needs more time, but will be in the squad."

Maybe being fifth in the league is a bit more normal for Southampton, but we'd like to do the maximum we can.

Toby Alderweireld, who damaged a hamstring at Arsenal on December 3, is fit to return this weekend and Tuesday's game is a realistic target for Morgan Schneiderlin (thigh) after two matches out.

Recovery

But Koeman revealed Jay Rodriguez has "had to take a step back" as he continues his recovery from a cruciate injury, and there is no date set for the England striker's return.

Southampton were second when they went into their recent run of games against City, Arsenal and Manchester United, but three defeats mean they go to Turf Moor in fifth place.

More from Burnley V Southampton

Koeman said: "Maybe being fifth in the league is a bit more normal for Southampton, but we'd like to do the maximum we can.

"We've lost three games against big clubs, and you have to learn from that if you want to make the next step. I think we played good games against Arsenal and United but the results were negative. We created good chances but scored once.

"How we played against United gave us a good feeling, but we don't like to lose. You don't get prizes for good football. You can talk and you can show videos, but winning games is what brings confidence. That's important."

The Burnley game is the first of seven in three weeks for Saints, and Koeman said: "We understand our programme in December. Going game-by-game is the best way to be successful."
