Napoli forward Lorenzo Insigne has successfully undergone surgery on his right knee and will be sidelined until next year.

The Italy international tore his anterior cruciate ligament during Sunday's 1-0 win over Fiorentina and is expected to be ruled out for six months.

A statement from Napoli read: "Lorenzo Insigne underwent knee surgery in Rome.

"The surgery was carried out by Professor Mariani at Villa Stuart lasted one hour and 15 minutes and it was a success."

Insigne's injury is a blow for Napoli coach Rafa Benitez, with the 23-year-old having started in nine of his side's 11 league games so far this season.

Insigne, who was set to be named in Antonio Conte's squad for Italy's upcoming Euro 2016 qualifier against Croatia, recently extended his contract with Napoli until June 2019.

Napoli are third in Serie A and are also competing in the Europa League this season.
