Hull City are leaving the door open for Maynor Figueroa, but believe a short-term loan at Wigan Athletic will prove beneficial for all concerned.

The 31-year-old defender has been allowed to link up with his former employers on an initial one-month deal.

Steve Bruce has moved the Honduran on after seeing him fail to make a Premier League appearance this season.

Maynor needed to go out and play. We decided to let him go out to Wigan and that should do him the world of good.

He did figure in a brief Europa League qualifying campaign, but needs regular minutes at this stage of his career.

Bruce acknowledges as much and is hoping that a spell in familiar surroundings at the DW Stadium will see Figueroa returned to Hull ready to challenge for a first team recall.

He said in the Hull Daily Mail: “Maynor needed to go out and play.

“We decided to let him go out to Wigan and that should do him the world of good.

“He just needed to be playing games again. He’s at that age and it was a good fit.

“With us playing wing-backs, that change in shape, has made it difficult for him.”

Figueroa is in the final year of his contract at the KC Stadium so will also be viewing a stint at Wigan as an opportunity to put himself in the shop window before becoming a free agent next summer.
