Mark Davies gave a glimpse of what new Bolton boss Neil Lennon will expect from him in his goalscoring cameo on Saturday.

The midfielder appeared for the final 16 minutes in Saturday's 3-1 win over Brentford and, within two minutes of arriving from the bench, he scored a brilliant goal by chesting the ball down, side-stepping one defender and placing a fine finish beyond goalkeeper David Button.

It was just the second goal the 23-year-old has scored since February 2013, with a slew of knee problems hindering his availability to previous boss Dougie Freedman.

Lennon admitted last week he will have to manage that injury concern on a weekly basis but, after seeing him inject a touch of class to proceedings over the weekend, the Northern Irishman is excited by what Davies can give him.

"Mark Davies scored a fantastic individual goal," said Lennon.

"It would light up any stadium and get people off their seats. These are the type of players that everyone wants to see.

"He's set a little benchmark for himself. I want him fitter but not just his goal, his play in general was of a very high order."

Davies had doubled Wanderers' lead following a fine opener from Neil Danns, who rifled home a drive from 25 yards with his unfavoured left foot.

The former Huddersfield wide man had squandered a series of chances prior to that goal, so Lennon was pleased to see one of his efforts finally come off.

"The first two goals were Premier League quality," he added.

"It's funny, I said to Dannzy at half-time, 'we'd just like a little belief that we're going to score from the shots outside the box, just slow your strike down and hit it with a bit more conviction'.

"I never saw that coming with his left foot!"
