Marcos Alonso is enjoying his football again at Fiorentina after being forced to head out on loan in 2013/14.

The Spanish full-back, in the first of a three-year deal in Italy, found first team opportunities hard to come by.

The opportunity to return to England, where he had previously shone for Bolton Wanderers, was snapped up in January when Sunderland came calling.

Alonso helped to keep Gus Poyet’s side in the Premier League and a permanent deal was mooted over the summer.

The 23-year-old has, however, returned to Florence and is now enjoying regular game time in Serie A.

Alonso told Marca: “I’m excited, because I want to play.

“Last season I had to leave for Sunderland due to a lack of games, but this season I have started well and enjoyed a good pre-season.

“The truth is that Fiorentina’s style of football suits my game. The coach has also told me to focus on my football and play as I know I can, which I have done so far.

“A call-up to the Spanish national side? I’m not thinking about that, I’m only focused on my team.”
