Koke does not regret his decision to stay with Atletico Madrid, believing Diego Simeone's side will continue to improve.

The midfielder was heavily linked with a move to Barcelona after impressing for Atletico last season.

The 22-year-old played a major role in helping Simeone's side win the Primera Division title and is hopeful there will be more success round the corner for the capital club.

I'm happy because I want to be here, I've been here all my life and it was not time to go.

"We must thank the interest of Barcelona and other teams, but I'm happy because I want to be here, I've been here all my life and it was not time to go," Koke told Onda Cero.

"The club is growing, we are growing as players - why I would go at the best time of Atletico Madrid?"

Koke is now on international duty with Spain and is bidding to fill the void left by Xavi, who retired from international duty over the summer.

Yet Koke shies away from comparisons with the Barcelona man.

"Xavi has won everything with Barcelona and here (with Spain)," he said.

"He has been top. I have a long way to go, a lot of work. But in the end, Xavi will be Xavi and Koke will be Koke."
