St Johnstone striker Steven MacLean has been ruled out for up to six months following a knee operation on Tuesday.

Prior to MacLean having his surgery, Saints were hoping the 32-year-old would only be out for a month, but the injury is much worse than manager Tommy Wright feared.

The news is a massive blow for MacLean, who was out for four months with an injury in the same knee last season.

"Steven had the operation and while the area of the knee affected was not the same area as the one which gave him a problem last season, unfortunately the surgeon needed to do another microfracture procedure in a different area,” Wright told the club's official website.

"The consequences of that is an absence of between four and six months.

"I'm extremely disappointed for the player because he worked extremely hard to get back from his injury last season and has been magnificent since he returned.

"This time we just have to support him through what will be another tough period but he will get back."

St Johnstone defender Tam Scobbie also faces an operation next week to repair medial ligament damage.
