Taylor: Barrett in contention

Gillingham boss Peter Taylor insists Adam Barrett remains in contention for first-team duty, despite being placed on the transfer list.

Taylor admitted last week he is willing to let the 34-year-old leave after two seasons at Priestfield Stadium but that will not stop him from playing the centre-half if a move fails to materialise. "It was a very difficult decision for anyone to say that someone like Adam can leave the club," Taylor told Gillingham's official website. "But while he's here, he will be treated with respect and he needs to keep his fitness going. "If he's here, then I want him to be as fit as he possibly can be for selection if I want him. He is a first-class professional in every way and I don't think I would be treating him right if I didn't do the type of things I did on Saturday. I'm not going to ignore him and let him get unfit. "He's on our payroll and one of our players and so if there's a chance he can come in and do a good job, then I will think about it."
