Borussia Dortmund are ready to drop their interest in Matthias Ginter after being warned off an approach by Freiburg.

The Germany international, who is currently away on World Cup duty, had previously expressed a desire to push through a move to Dortmund, claiming there was ‘no plan B’ in his mind.

He has, however, been informed by his current employers that he is going nowhere.

Freiburg chairman Fritz Keller believes it is too early for the 20-year-old defender to be making such a move, telling Deutsche Pressagentur: “Matthias will play for SC Freiburg next season, this is what we have told him already.

“It’s about our responsibility regarding a young player of 20 years of age. It’s best for everyone that he stays one more year at Freiburg.”

That stance has helped to curb the incessant transfer rumours, with Arsenal having also been heavily linked with an approach for the talented youngster.

They will now have to turn their attention elsewhere, with Dortmund general manager Michael Zorc announcing that his side have already conceded defeat in their pursuit of Ginter.

He told Ruhr Nachrichten: “We have witnessed the statements made on this matter.

“Matthias Ginter is a very interesting player, he is a Germany international.

“But in Sokratis Papathatopoulos, Mats Hummels and Neven Subotic we have three excellent central defenders. We are expecting Neven to return from his cruciate ligament injury this summer.”
