Port Vale captain Doug Loft has turned down the League One club's offer of a new contract.

Loft was at Vale Park for talks on Monday but informed the Valiants that he plans to accept an offer from another club, believed to be Gillingham. The 27-year-old midfielder is from Kent and he and his family have been keen to return to that part of the country. Vale manager Micky Adams told the club's official website: "We thank Doug for his service in the last five years and I am sure he will be fondly remembered as the last captain to get a Port Vale team promoted." Loft made 196 appearances for the club after arriving at Vale Park in 2009.
