Hume eyes Fleetwood promotion

Iain Hume is determined to continue Fleetwood's remarkable journey at Wembley as they target a sixth promotion in the last decade.

Hume, who is set to play the final game of his loan spell from Preston against Burton in the League Two final, has only been with the Cod Army since March but could play a part in a historic campaign as they seek a spot in the third tier of English football next season. They have risen through the divisions since Andy Pilley became the club's chairman and Hume hopes there is yet another promotion for Fleetwood's fans to celebrate come Monday. "It's ridiculous," he said of the club's ascent in such a short space of time. "The owner's come in and it just seems to be promotion after promotion and I don't think we want to ruin that trend. Next Monday's going to be a massive day for everyone involved in the club and we're going to do our best to come out on top." Graham Alexander's side booked their spot at Wembley thanks to a 1-0 aggregate win over York with Matty Blair's goal in the first leg ultimately enough to see them through. It was the defence which took the bulk of the praise, though, as successive clean sheets ensured the Minstermen bowed out at the semi-final stage. "Our back five and possibly six with Schuey (Steven Schumacher) in front, and then Goody (Alan Goodall) - I thought they were immense," Hume added. "And I thought they were immense on Monday night. Defences win games, if you keep clean sheets you can't lose so over the two legs they've been absolutely brilliant." It also means that the 30-year-old Hume will be playing at Wembley for the first time in his career. The Canada international, who includes Tranmere, Leicester and Barnsley among his former employers, said: "We got the result we wanted; we're going to Wembley. I don't know how many of the lads have been to Wembley, I haven't, so I'm looking forward to it. "I was hoping we were going to do it automatically. The disappointing thing for the group was that we didn't do it automatically but we're going to Wembley and we've got a great chance. There's 90 minutes ahead of us and we'll be working our socks off."
