Monkhouse weighing up options

Image: Andy Monkhouse: Spoken to a few clubs

Winger Andy Monkhouse has several options as he searches for a new club following his release from Hartlepool.

The 33-year-old was not offered a new contract by boss Colin Cooper, bringing an end to his eight-year stay at Victoria Park, where he made over 300 appearances and scored 52 goals. Despite his advancing years, Monkhouse expects to get a new club soon, but is not looking forward to joining the ranks of hundreds of out-of-contract players. "My agent is looking into a few things and I have spoken to a couple of clubs, but it is early days," he said. "I will just have to wait by the phone and wait for something to happen. "You see each club releasing 10 or 11 players so it is tough out there, but I am confident of getting sorted out and going to a new club and doing the business there." Having spent the majority of his career in the Championship and League One, Monkhouse believes he can still do a job at a good level, but would not rule out anything, including dropping to the Conference. "I will look at every opportunity and have a think about it," he added. "I am not going to be big-headed and say I won't play in the Conference or I definitely want to play in League One, we will just have to see what comes up. "I am 33, but I feel fit and I play a lot of games year in year out, so I feel as if I could play for a few years yet, but I'm getting to the stage where I start to think about what I want to do afterwards. "Most players when they finish want to stay in the game and pass down the knowledge they have learned and I am the same."
