Russ Wilcox is convinced new signing Gary McSheffrey will play a key role in Scunthorpe's bid to bounce straight back to League One.

McSheffrey, who signed a short-term deal until the end of the season on Monday, helped former clubs Birmingham (2007 and 2009) and Leeds (2010) to promotion. The 31-year-old showed all his qualities by firing a hat-trick in front of Wilcox for the Iron's reserves in a 4-1 win against Sheffield Wednesday last week. "It wasn't just down to his performance in that match, but we also know a lot about him and the work he has been doing and the previous clubs he has been at," Wilcox told the club's official website. "I think you saw the quality he has when he is out there from that performance last week." Wilcox added: "He can bring a lot of quality and has excellent delivery of the ball from set-plays, he has a terrific left foot and also has an abundance of experience which is priceless."
