Stoke City boss Mark Hughes says Robert Huth is a major doubt for Tuesday's Capital One Cup fourth round tie at Birmingham City.
Huth was on the receiving end of a heavy tackle by Javier Hernandez during last weekend's Premier League defeat to Manchester United.
Hughes felt Hernandez should have been sent off for the challenge, and insult was added to injury when the Mexican bagged United's winner.
"I said at the time that I thought it was reckless," said Hughes. "Robert's a real doubt for the game on Tuesday because of the challenge. He's got a very swollen ankle and is the one big doubt I've got.
"It was a bad challenge but I said my piece at the weekend. I stand by that."
Ryan Shawcross was booked in the dressing room at half-time after getting involved in an angry exchange with Robin van Persie as the teams headed down the tunnel.
Hughes says he hasn't discussed the incident with his captain and described it as 'something out of nothing'.
"The referee felt he needed to book Ryan in the changing room, which was a first for me," said Hughes. "Maybe there were a few petty things going on but they resolve themselves.
"Sometimes it's just better to get on with it. The half had finished and I would have thought the natural break in proceedings would have allowed everyone to calm down, which they did.
"In the second half there was no inclination from anyone on either side to carry on. It's just one of those things that flares up very quickly and is extinguished just as quickly."
