Oxford midfielder Danny Rose says his extra training on free-kicks paid off with Saturday's opening goal against Bury.

Rose curled home a 25-yard free-kick to set his new side on their way to a 2-1 victory over the Shakers and he revealed that he had been putting in the hours after training last week perfecting his technique.

"I've had a few sessions on it during the week that I've done on my own and for it to come off in a game is very rewarding," he told the Oxford Mail.

"You don't often get many chances where you have a free-kick in the right place, but that one was in the perfect position.

"It was just off-centre to the right so it favoured the left foot. Hunty (Oxford's David Hunt) fancied himself, but because it was just on that side I thought 'this is mine'. Thankfully I connected right and it went in."
