Chesterfield Player of the Year Nathan Smith is set to return for pre-season as he nears the end of his rehabilitation.

The defender's season was cut short by an ankle injury sustained against Oxford in March but he is making good progress towards his comeback. Smith, 26, told the club's official website: "Rehab is going well, the cast is off. I start running next week so they said just take it slowly and I'll be fine for pre-season. "I was doing everything to try and prevent any injuries, which was working, but one thing I couldn't prevent was a fracture." Smith will hope to return in the left-back position for a pre-season campaign which involves visits from Championship sides Nottingham Forest and Huddersfield Town to the Proact Stadium.
