Stuttgart midfielder Christian Gentner has started contract negotiations with the Bundesliga club.
The 27-year-old's current deal expires at the end of the season and he could therefore be able to begin looking for a new club in the January transfer window.
But Gentner, a Stuttgart Academy graduate who temporarily left for a three-year spell at Wolfsburg in 2007, wants to stay with his club.
He told Kicker: "We have started negotiations. It's all in the beginning."
Meanwhile, Gotoku Sakai is hopeful his loan deal at Stuttgart from Japanese club Albirex Niigata, which expires at the end of the season, will be made permanent.
He said: "I would really like to stay at Stuttgart."
