Thompson eyeing his return

Portsmouth defender Josh Thompson is fit again after an ankle injury and looking to win back his place in the side.

The 21-year-old centre-half has been out of action for a fortnight with an ankle problem but played in the reserves' 1-1 draw against Crawley on Tuesday. Gabor Gyepes and Lubomir Michalik have since struck up an effective partnership at the heart of Pompey's back four, but Thompson is rising to the challenge. "It's good to see competition for defensive positions at Pompey - every club needs that," he told the club's website. "It might mean that you spend periods out of the team, but I would rather be out of the side because of that than with an injury. "Competition keeps you at your best because if you don't train hard or are off your game, then there are others to take your spot. It keeps everyone on their toes and you all need to give your all - it brings the best out of all the players."
