Dundee United snap up Frenchman on short-term contract

Dundee United have secured the signing of French free agent Gregory Vignal on a short-term contract. The former Liverpool player has joined the Tayside club until January 5, with United having the option of extending the deal. Vignal, who can play in defence or midfield, has also previously played for Lens, Southampton, Portsmouth, Kaiserslautern and Birmingham. The 31-year-old has prior experience of Scottish football having won a league title and League Cup medal while on loan at Rangers in the 2004-05 season. "I have been looking to add a left-sided defender to the squad," United manager Peter Houston said. "Gregory has plenty of experience and it is important that we add experience to our young squad but first and foremost he is a very good player who will provide extra quality on the left-hand side of the park. "The length of the contract is ideal for both parties. It will allow Gregory to get a feel for our club and gives us the opportunity to assess Gregory over a longer period."
