Motta - It's down to players

Italy midfielder urges his team-mates to show the right attitude

Thiago Motta: Italy midfielder ready to play in any system against Spain

Italy's Thiago Motta believes it will be the attitude of the players rather than tactics that will determine the result of their game against Spain.

Cesare Prandelli's side will face the reigning European champions in their opening Group C game on Sunday amid mass speculation about a possible change of tactics.

The Azzurri were beaten 3-0 byRussia last week in a friendly game and that defeat has ignited debate about whether Prandelli will change from a back four to a back three.

Change

That would represent a dramatic shift, as Italy played with a back four throughout the Euro 2012 qualification campaign.

If Prandelli does opt for that system, it is widely expected that Motta will play alongside Andrea Pirlo and Claudio Marchisio as a three in midfield.

However, the Paris Saint Germain anchor man says it is down to the players once they cross that white line.

Mentality

"Whether we play a defence with three, four or two players doesn't change anything," said Motta.

"What makes a difference is our attitude, our mentality and the desire the 11 players have to perform.

"After that it's up to the boss, he's the one who picks the system and the 11 players.

"It's not important, what counts are that when we play we have the desire to win."
