Martins ruled out of Euro 2012 due to muscle strain

Portugal have drafted Hugo Viana into their squad for Euro 2012 after Carlos Martins was ruled out of the tournament due to a leg injury. Benfica midfielder Martins, who spent this season on loan at Granada, was last week included in coach Paulo Bento's 23-man for Poland and Ukraine. However, the Portuguese Football Federation has confirmed Martins will not recover from a muscle strain in time to be fit for the European Championship. Taking his place is 29-year-old Braga playmaker Viana, who failed to make an appearance in qualification for the competition. The former Newcastle United midfielder, though, has enjoyed an impressive season and helped Braga to finish third in the Portuguese league. Portugal are in Group B at the European Championship alongside Holland, Denmark and Germany, who they face in their opening match on 9th June.
