Flop of the season

Our Football Desk select their flops of the season for 2011/12 and invite you to pick your own.

Stewart Downing, Liverpool: Signed from Aston Villa for £20million in the summer, the talk was that Liverpool had seen something everyone else had missed - a 'Moneyball' option that could prove surprisingly effective. But 36 Premier League games have yielded no goals and no assists. Downing's crossing has been poor and his body language worse. While Andy Carroll has endured the merciless mockery, Downing has been the Reds' biggest flop. AB Shaun Wright-Phillips, Queens Park Rangers: Two years ago Wright-Phillips was making his way to South Africa as part of England's 2010 World Cup party. It is fair to assume he will not be booking a seat on the plane to Euro 2012. QPR hoped he would help to take them to the next level, but he struggled for form and is yet to open his goal account. CB Charlie Adam, Liverpool: The biggest flop could be labelled the Liverpool award, but of their new boys Charlie Adam had a woeful campaign. In Steven Gerrard's absence you could not have hoped for a better temporary replacement - or so we thought, instead the Scot merely underlined that he was well short of the standards set by the Liverpool skipper. GB Charles N'Zogbia, Aston Villa: For the Aston Villa fans that were less than happy with Alex McLeish's appointment as manager last summer, the acquisition of Wigan ace Charles N'Zogbia for £9.5million could have been seen as a cushion to soften the blow. However, the forward has failed to live up to lofty expectations, scoring just two goals in 32 appearances after a distinctly lacklustre campaign. RG Andre Villas-Boas, Chelsea: The Portuguese coach was not given the time he needed or deserved to make his mark at Chelsea, but with the Blues having shelled out 15million euros to secure his services from Porto last summer, he can hardly be regarded as a success. Whether the fault lies with demanding owner Roman Abramovich, the power wielded by senior players in the dressing room, or Villas-Boas' own decisions remains open to debate. RP Jordan Henderson, Liverpool: "I can't remember when Jordan Henderson has taken a game by the scruff of the neck." Not my words but those of former Liverpool star Mark Lawrenson. He and I are not alone in questioning the contribution of the former Sunderland youngster since his big money move to Anfield. He was expected to add much-needed drive to the Liverpool midfield but has failed to find his niche while his tally of just two goals is decidedly underwhelming.
