Egyptian signs initial deal until end of the season

Mainz have re-signed Mohamed Zidan on a short-term contract from Bundesliga champions Borussia Dortmund. Zidan, 30, has penned a deal until the end of the current campaign with the option for another two seasons. The Egyptian striker scored 22 goals in 41 appearances in two separate spells for Mainz in 2005/06 and 2006/07. But he has struggled for fitness in recent seasons, making just two Bundesliga appearances for Dortmund this term.

Mainz general manager Christian Heidel said: "Mohamed is exactly the kind of striker we were looking for. "He is on top of his fitness and went through a full winter training programme at Dortmund. "He does not need any warming up." Zidan added: "I was looking to get regular first-team football and I am happy to get this at a club of the standards of Mainz. "I had two fantastic spells there and I never forgot that. I am happy."
