Former Freiburg captain Heiko Butscher has been told he still does not have a future at the club despite a change in management.

Streich to continue to omit former captain

Former Freiburg captain Heiko Butscher has been told he still does not have a future at the club despite a change in management. The 31-year-old had been transfer-listed and omitted from the first-team squad by ex-boss Marcus Sorg, but at the end of December he was fired with the club sitting bottom of the Bundesliga and replaced by Christian Streich. Butscher had hoped for a change in fortune under Streich and attempted to participate in Freiburg's first training session after Christmas. However, the defender was again told he was not welcome, despite the protests of an estimated 300 fans who watched the training, and he is still on the lookout for a new club. Butscher told Sky Deutschland television: "Of course I am very disappointed. The main thing over here is the club, not the individual player. "The decision was taken. And if the club avoids relegation at the end of the season, the decision will have been the right one." Streich said: "I have been talking to Heik. There has been a decision. "This decision will remain intact, we are not going to change this."
