Defender extends Groningen deal by three years

FC Groningen defender Tom Hiariej has extended his contract to keep him at Euroborg until summer 2015. The Dutchman's old contract was due to expire at the end of the season but he has chosen to stay on at the Eredivisie side. The 23-year-old, a youth product at Groningen who can also play as a midfielder, was delighted to put pen to paper on a new deal. "We were already talking to each other, but my intention from the beginning was actually to stay in Groningen," he told the club's official website. "I feel comfortable with FC Groningen and I really like the atmosphere of the club. FC is still under development and is on the rise. I want to remain a part of that." Groningen technical manager Henk Degree Field added: "It always gives things an extra dimension when a young player from your youth side breaks into the first team. He has long been a fixture within the first selection. "We had been talking with him to see if we could extend his expiring contract and we are delighted that Tom has made this choice."
