Striker joins Serie A rivals from Palermo

Palermo have announced that Massimo Maccarone is to join Sampdoria after being placed on the transfer list last week. The former Middlesbrough striker has struggled to hold down a first-team place at the Sicilian club since arriving on a three-year deal in the summer. Palermo therefore decided to allow Maccarone to look for a new club as they felt they had enough attacking options at their disposal. Maccarone initially seemed reluctant to leave before it was made clear to him that he had no future at Palermo and would have to spend the rest of the season watching from the stands. Serie A strugglers Cesena were the first to express an interest but it is Sampdoria who have now won the chase for Maccarone's signature. The 31-year-old will be relishing the opportunity to get his career back on track following a frustrating few months with Palermo. He has previously been on the books of Empoli and Siena as well as Boro.
