St Pauli have been rocked by the news that Gerald Asamoah is expected to miss the start of the season.

Experienced forward suffers thigh injury in pre-season

Newly-promoted Bundesliga outfit St Pauli have been rocked by the news that summer signing Gerald Asamoah is expected to miss the start of the season due to injury. The former Germany forward sustained a thigh problem in a recent pre-season friendly and is now in a race against time to be fit for a campaign-opener at Freiburg on 21st August. Asamoah was signed by last season's Bundesliga 2 runners-up St Pauli as a free transfer from Schalke this summer to add some experience to Holger Stanislawski's squad. The 31-year-old's injury is therefore a major blow for the top flight new-boys, although he has avoided the need for an operation on his damaged tendon. St Pauli team doctor Johannes Holz told Sportinformationsdienst: "This is an injury we have to take seriously. "We are not going to operate, but the injury lay-off will take several weeks and it looks like it will be extremely difficult to get Gerald fit for the first match of the new season."
