Port Vale have appointed Geoff Horsfield as assistant manager to Micky Adams.
The 35-year-old retired from playing midway through last season after he was diagnosed with testicular cancer.
But the former Fulham, Birmingham, Wigan and West Brom striker made a full recovery and he finished the season with Lincoln.
Now he has taken his first steps into management by agreeing to be number two to Adams, but he will also play for Vale.
"I am looking forward to it - it is something that I have always wanted to do," he said.
"From turning 30 years old I have always wanted to come into the coaching side and Micky Adams has given me the chance to keep on playing, which I could have done at a couple of clubs, but this is a chance to do my coaching and be an assistant manager and I am looking forward to it.
"I am going to learn a lot with Micky Adams. He has given me a leash to work with the strikers and do some scouting as well, but first and foremost I have got to get my fitness and match fitness because I want to come in and play and be part of the side, not just come in and be assistant manager.
"I want to play most of the games and Micky is going to teach me the ropes and I am going to enjoy it."
