Defensive duo stay on as Abbott and Burgmeier depart

Darlington boss Colin Todd has convinced skipper Steve Foster and Ian Miller to remain with the Quakers. With the North East club falling into administration earlier this year, a host of players have left the Darlington Arena over the summer after being told they were free to move on. The League Two side are expected to see their future officially secured in the coming weeks after a creditors' meeting. Captain Foster and fellow defender Miller have pledged their future to Darlo, but striker Pawel Abbott and Liechtenstein international Franz Burgmeier are moving on.

Leader

Todd told The Journal: "Miller and Foster will stay next season. It's good news for us. Steve's a good leader and a good skipper and someone that we need at this football club. Ian is a good player as well so they are good people to have on board. "I sat down with them last week and told them we had players coming in, that the squad is taking shape and that there are reasons to be quietly confident now. "We've had to be sensible but there's a good mix there now and those two can play a big part in it." Burgmeier has joined FC Vaduz in his homeland, while Abbott has been linked with Oldham - who are managed by former Quakers boss Dave Penney - and Hearts. "They were out of contract so they were always going," Todd added. "I think it would have been impossible for us to keep them on the wages they were on. "Things are still tight and it was probably in all of our interests that they moved on." Todd has been working hard behind the scenes to rebuild a squad which has been decimated ahead of the new season, but will not reveal who he has agreed terms with.
Identities
"I have got most of my squad in now. It's been busy over the last week but I have got quite a few players signed up," he added. "I will not reveal the identities of those players until just before pre-season because we want to make a splash, but we've got some signed up now. "We're working to tight financial constraints so it's been a fair challenge for us to get everything sorted but we're quite far along now. "There's some youthful players in there, some experienced players who maybe started out at Premier League clubs before dropping down to the Football League. I'm delighted with what I have managed to do so far."
