Saints stopper to decide on future at season's end

Southampton defender Michael Svensson has denied reports emanating from Scandinavia which have suggested he has retired. The popular Swede has endured a miserable season that has been plagued by injuries, having made a surprise comeback at the start of the campaign following a serious knee complaint. Since suffering a fresh Achilles injury Svensson has devoted much of his time to a new role within the Saints' coaching staff. It had been claimed he had decided to call time on his playing career to concentrate his efforts solely on coaching, but this suggestion has now been rebuffed. "I have not given up on continuing playing but have been working primarily on the coaching side since Mark Wotte was given the job as head coach," he told the club's official website. "I would like to continue to play for as long as possible, but I will make a decision on my future at the end of the season, after consulting a specialist. "I was asked by a newspaper in Sweden about my options for the future and we talked about coaching as an option, but I have not made any decisions yet."
