Veteran midfielder accepts player/coach role at Brunton Park

Graham Kavanagh has joined Carlisle United in a player/coaching role after his Sunderland contract was cancelled by mutual consent. The veteran midfielder had been on loan at Carlisle since early October and scored four goals in 17 appearances for the League One club. He has agreed his departure from Sunderland and has now accepted an 18-month contract to join Carlisle on a permanent basis. Kavanagh will also help out on the coaching side and he is looking forward to his new challenge at Brunton Park.

Challenge

"This is a new challenge for me, but it's one that I'm looking forward to," Kavanagh told the club's official website. "I'm looking forward to combining the playing and coaching side of things and hopefully we will continue to build on the improvements that have been made recently. "There are some very good players here and it will be good for me to be able to help Greg in what he is trying to achieve." Carlisle boss Greg Abbott added: "We've already seen the influence that Graham brings in to the dressing room and out on to the pitch, and that's what experienced players can do for you. "I think this is a very good signing for us, and I'm looking forward to working with him."
