Shala and McGovern make Tannadice move

Dundee United have completed the signings German striker Andis Shala and Northern Ireland international goalkeeper Michael McGovern. Shala, formerly of VfR Mannheim, has agreed a three-year deal after the 19-year-old impressed manager Craig Levein while on trial in May. McGovern, who was in Northern Ireland's squad for the 1-0 friendly defeat to Bulgaria in February, moves to Tannadice from Celtic after the 23-year-old agreed a one-year contract. And Levein is hopeful McGovern will provide competition for current shot-stopper Lukasz Zaluska. "I want competition for Lukasz and Michael will provide that," Levein told United's official website.

"He is very well thought of at Celtic, but at a club that size first-team opportunities for young players can be difficult to get." Levein also has high hopes for Shala after being tipped off by the same scout who discovered defender Mihael Kovacevic. "It's a source that usually throws up players from Eastern Europe," added Levein when asked about unearthing Shala. "I've seen him and (assistant manager) Peter Houston went over to Germany to watch him and he is an excellent prospect." Levein has also hinted that he is to add to the batch of strikers he already has at his disposal before the start of the new season. "It's good to get another striker. There's a chance I'll add another before the summer is out," concluded Levein.
