Uruguayan defender fails medical

Sebastian Fernandez's move to Groningen has fallen through. The Uruguayan defender was all set for a move to Holland after Groningen struck a deal with his club Defensor. However, the Dutch club revealed that the move has fallen through. "We came to an agreement with both the player and the club about a contract for five seasons," director Hans Nijland revealed. "Then there was a medical test where we examined some instability in his right knee. "At the moment we did not expect the transfer to fall through, but to exclude any risk we had to have an MRI scan. "Then we heard from this there was an increased risk. That is why, unfortunately, we decided not to sign Fernandez." Groningen, though, are thought to be lining up deals for Wigan defender Andreas Granqvist and NEC Nijmegen stopper Peter Wisgerhof.
