Defender hopes to have impressed Eriksson

Sam Williamson hopes to be offered a new contract at Manchester City after making his debut on Sunday. The young defender was handed a shock call up by Sven Goran Eriksson for City's 3-1 victory over Portsmouth at Eastlands. He started the game on the bench, but was given his chance to impress when he replaced the injured Richard Dunne during the second-half. He admits that just last week he was expecting to be shown the door by the club at the end of the season, but now hopes to have done enough to earn a new deal.

Experience

"It felt really good. Not so long ago I thought that I wouldn't ever really play (in the first team) because my contract is up in the summer," he told City's official website. "So just to get the chance to play was great, even if that's my one and only appearance then it's been such a great experience. "I've been thinking about what I'm doing to do when I leave here, but hopefully now I could stay, or at least I've had the chance to put myself in the shop window."
Joking
Williamson only found out that he was going to be involved against Pompey last Friday, and admits that the announcement came as a bit of a shock. "We'd been out training, and I'd been training with the first-team, but I wasn't expecting to be involved. "Afterwards, (coach) Derek Fazackerley came up to me when I was having my lunch and just told me I was in. "So it was a bit of a shock and I thought: 'Right, change my plans for the weekend then!' I thought he was joking at first."
