Palermo duo sign on

Barzagli and Zaccardo sign five-year deals

Palermo duo Andrea Barzagli and Cristian Zaccardo have both secured new contracts with the Italian side. Barzagli and Zaccardo put pen-to-paper on similar deals that will see them contracted to the club until 2012. 26-year-old Barzagli had been linked with a move in pre-season, with Premier League side Newcastle United touted to be amongst his more interested suitors. Palermo will therefore be delighted to secure his signature for another five years alongside Zaccardo, both of whom have featured heavily in recent seasons for the Serie A side. Both players were members of the Italy squad which triumphed in the 2006 World Cup. Meanwhile, Palermo defender Giuseppe Biava could be back in contention for his side's first Uefa Cup clash in September. The 30-year-old picked up an injury in a pre-season friendly, and will miss Palermo's first few fixtures of the new campaign, but the club remain confident of a swift return.
