Schaars prefers AZ

Stijn Schaars looks set to stay at AZ Alkmaar and turn down a move to PSV Eindhoven.

The midfielder has a contract until 2009 but was expected to depart the DSB Stadion in the summer.

PSV wanted to sign Schaars, but the midfielder now prefers to stay at AZ after Louis Van Gaal committed his future to the club.

AZ have made Schaars an improved offer and he will likely extend his contract soon.

Meanwhile, AZ have signed goalkeepers Boy Waterman and Sergio Romero on permanent deals.

Waterman, who spent the season on loan at the club, joins from Heerenveen on a contract until 2011, while Romero has inked a five-year deal.

AZ will not be extending to contract of Khalid Sinouh and the 31-year-old will spend just one season with the Eredivisie club.
