Eredivisie glory for PSV

On an afternoon of high drama in Holland, PSV pipped AZ and Ajax to the title.

On an afternoon of high drama in Holland, PSV Eindhoven pipped AZ Alkmaar and Ajax to the Eredivisie title.

The three sides started the day locked together on 72 points and all had the title in their grasp at some stage in the afternoon.

AZ started the day in pole position, but they were beaten at Excelsior and this opened the door to PSV and Ajax.

PSV and Ajax claimed wins over Vitesse Arnhem and Willem II respectively, with the former's 5-1 romp proving enough.

PSV certainly pulled the title out of the fire, as they had held a huge lead before a terrible run of form opened the door for Ajax and AZ.

The return from injury of Alex has certainly made a difference and the powerful defender netted the first on eight minutes. Jefferson Farfan added a second before Theo Janssen reduced the arrears.

Ibrahim Afellay and Farfan netted after the break and skipper Philip Cocu popped up with the key fifth 13 minutes from time.

Ajax did what they could as goals from Urby Emanuelson and Klaas Jan Huntelaar saw off Willem II, but PSV's blitz saw them take the title.

AZ will be licking their wounds for some time as they slipped to defeat at Excelsior. Keeper Boy Waterman was sent off on 19 minutes and Excelsior took the lead from the penalty spot seconds later.

Simon Cziommer hauled AZ level, only for Henrico Drost to fire Excelsoir ahead on the hour.

Danny Koevermans levelled the scores with 20 minutes remaining to set up a grandstand finish, but as AZ committed men forward they were caught on the break by Daniel Guijo-Velasco in injury-time.

Roda JC will head into the Uefa Cup play-offs on a high after thrashing Heracles 7-0.

Andres Oper opened the scoring on 13 minutes and goals by Sekou Cisse and Eddy Bosnar (og) handed Roda a cushion at the interval.

Kemy Agustien, Jamaique Vandamme and Boldiszar Bodor put them 6-0 to the good before Oper added a late seventh.

Loic Laval and Sander Keller were on target as Utrecht ended the season with a 2-0 win at Groningen.

Haris Medunjanin's goal on the hour handed Sparta a 1-0 win over RKC Waalwijk.

Afonso Alves netted four times as Heerenveen overwhelmed Feyenoord 5-1, while Twente warmed up for the play-offs with a 2-1 win over NAC Breda.

Relegated ADO Den Haag's season ended on a low note as they were beaten 3-2 at NEC Nijmegen.
