Champions PSV Eindhoven drew 1-1 with Feyenoord.
Champions PSV Eindhoven had to come from a goal down to earn a 1-1 draw with Feyenoord.
Romeo Castelen gave Feyenoord the lead on 51 minutes, but Philip Cocu earned PSV a point with a 70th minute leveller.
AZ Alkmaar remain in second spot after a goalless draw at Twente.
Ajax climbed up to fourth spot with a last-gasp 2-1 win over Vitesse Arnhem at the Amsterdam ArenA.
Youssouf Hersi gave Vitesse the lead on 62 minutes, but two late strikes from Klaas-Jan Huntelaar (89), Angelos Haristeas (90) earned Ajax all three points.
FC Groningen boosted their European hopes with a 2-1 win over Utrecht.
Koen van de Laak (50), Rasmus Lindgren (59) put Groningen in control and although Tom Caluwe pulled a goal back on 74 minutes Utrecht held on for the spoils.
Basement boys RBC Roosendal suffered another defeat after going down 2-1 to ADO Den Haag.
The home side stunned Den Haag with Ebou Sillah firing them in front on 52 minutes, but Edwin de Graaf (75), Roy Stroeve's 80th minute penalty turned the game in Den Haag's favour.
Roda JC moved into the top half of the table with a 3-0 victory at NEC Nijmegen.
Two goals from Cristiano (9,66), and a late Sekou Cisse (90) strike proved to be enough for Roda.
Sparta Rotterdam moved out of the bottom three with a 3-2 success over RKC Waalwijk.
Hans van de Haar gave RKC the lead right on the stroke of half time, but Jason Oost drew Sparta level from the penalty spot on 62 minutes.
RKC were gifted the lead back on 71 minutes when Steve Olfers put through his own net.
Oost netted his second penalty of the game on 79 minutes to level matters again and Ivan Cvetkov grabbed the winner for the hosts seven minutes from time.
Struggling Willem II picked up a precious win after a thrilling 4-3 victory over Heerenveen.
Moussa Dembele broke the deadlock on ten minutes for Willem II and Iwan Redan doubled the lead on 20 minutes
Former Leicester man Mark de Vries pulled a goal back for Heereneveen a minute before the break and ex-Manchester City ace Paul Bosvelt drew the visitors level just before the hour mark.
Arnold Bruggink gave Heerenveen the lead on 63 minutes, but Dembele hit back for the hosts on 71 minutes.
It looked like the game would end all-square until Redan popped up with the winner in stoppage time.
Heracles came from two goals down to beat NAC Breda 4-2.
Leonardo (4), Ronnie Stam (30) put NAC in total control, but Gert Jan Tamerus reduced the arrears right on the stroke of half time.
Sota Hirayama drew Heracles level on 54 minutes and late goals from Stefaan Tanghe (77), Mark Hocher (90) completed the comeback.
