Matthew Briggs scored and saw red on his Millwall debut as the Lions beat Wycombe 1-0 to progress to the second round of the Capital One Cup.

Briggs struck what would prove to be the match-winning goal just before the half-hour but his night came to a premature end when he was shown a second yellow card in the 59th minute, although Wycombe could not make their numerical advantage count.

Despite being on the back foot it was Wycombe who had the first chance but Paul Hayes' swivelling volley from Sido Jombati's cross was straight at David Forde.

Alfie Mawson's mistake on the edge of his box nearly let in Millwall's Lee Gregory, but the striker could not control the loose ball.

And Gregory was in action again seconds later as Jimmy Abdou's through ball slipped under the former Halifax man's foot into Matt Ingram's hands.

Millwall's pressure paid off in the 27th minute as summer signing Briggs fired past Ingram, ripping his shirt off in the celebration and receiving a yellow card.

Briggs' exuberant celebration cost him dear early in the second half, when his high challenge on Jombati earned him a second yellow and an early bath.

With Wycombe unable to capitalise on their one-man advantage, Ian Holloway made use of his young bench, which included six products of the Millwall youth system.

Wycombe duo Paris Cowan-Hall and Steven Craig had opportunities to level the score in the final 10 minutes, but neither of which caused Forde any trouble.
