Italians deservedly beat Spanish giants

Roma deservedly beat Real Madrid 2-1 in the Bernabeu to progress into the quarter-finals of the UEFA Champions League. The Italians put in an efficient performance to win the tie 4-2 on aggregate and consign the Spanish champions to a last-16 stage exit for the fourth successive season. The game finally came to life in the 15th minute when Roma keeper Alexandre Doni needed to get down well to his left to push Julio Baptista's deflected free-kick out for a corner. Shortly afterwards, Alberto Aquilani had two great chances to almost put the Italians in front. He firstly hit the post with a wonderful shot from 35-yards out and then hit another long distance shot which Real keeper Iker Casillas did well to get down to save and push out for a corner. The game improved considerably in the second-half and Baptista hit the crossbar with a dipping free-kick shortly after the restart. Roma substitute Mirko Vucinic then hit the crossbar in the 66th minute with a powerful left-footed shot from a Max Tonetto cross. Real's task got harder when Pepe was sent-off for a second bookable offence on 71 minutes after obstructing Vucinic.

Opener

Two minutes later Roma took the lead after Tonetto crossed from the left and Rodrigo Taddei got in front of his marker to head in from 12 yards out. But Raul replied almost immediately for Real (75) after being found by Robinho on the edge of the box and coolly slotted home. Real pressed for the goal they needed to send the game into extra-time but Roma wrapped up the victory in injury-time when the outstanding Vucinic headed home from a Christian Panucci free-kick.
