Samuel Eto'o set a new Africa Cup of Nations record as Cameroon eased into the quarter-finals with a 3-0 win over Sudan.

The Barcelona striker opened, and finished, the scoring to surpass Laurent Pokou's record, which he had equalled against Zambia over the weekend.

Eto'o should have scored after just two minutes when he blazed a volley over, having seen his first attempt saved by Elmuiz Abdalla after the Sudan keeper had blocked Joseph-Desire Job's shot.

But on 26 minutes, Eto'o made no mistake from the penalty spot as he drilled home his shot after Achille Emana had been pulled back by Alla Yousif Hado.

On 34 minutes, Cameroon made it 2-0 when Hamouda El Bashir's attempted clearance from Joel Epalle's cross struck his team-mate Mohamed Ali Elkhidir on the back and trickled across the line.

Sudan almost pulled one back early in the second half when Hado's well-struck shot was pushed away by Carlos Kameni.

Eto'o should have scored again when clean through, but tamely shot at Abdalla, who later saved smartly from substitute Bertin Tomou's header.

In injury-time, Eto'o notched his 16th goal in tournament history with a clinical finish after latching on to Modeste M'Bami's ball over the top.
