Grimsby Town defeated Stockport County 2-1 to book their place in the Johnstone's Paint Trophy Northern final. Torrid conditions proved to be decisive at Edgeley Park, with the weather playing a part in all three of the game's goals. Jamie Clarke handed Grimsby the lead but Antony Pilkington hit back; however Michael Raynes' own goal sunk Stockport. The visitors spurned a golden opportunity to take a first-minute lead when Conrad Logan did well to deny Danny North. And Logan was called into action just minutes later, saving well from Gary Jones' effort. Stockport eventually carved out a decent chance after Paul Turnbull crossed for Anthony Elding, but the striker's effort clattered off the post. The wet and windy conditions then took their toll as Logan failed to keep out Clarke's (59) long-range strike. But Grimsby responded just two minutes later when Pilkington's shot squeezed its way under shot-stopper Phil Barnes. Alan Buckley's men grabbed their winner with just 11 minutes remaining when Raynes lashed Nick Hegarty's cross into his own net.
