Rosenberg: Opening goal

Werder Bremen kept alive their hopes of qualifying for the knock-out stage of the UEFA Champions League with a 3-2 victory over Real Madrid.

Robinho's fine strike cancelled out Markus Rosenberg's opener, although goals from Boubacar Sanogo and Aaron Hunt ensured the crucial win for the Bundesliga outfit.

Ruud van Nistelrooy pulled one back for Real in the 72nd minute, but it was not enough as Werder claimed the vital three-point haul.

Werder got off to a dream start when Rosenberg shinned the ball past Iker Casillas after Sanogo flicked on Clemens Fritz's right-wing cross.

Although that was defender Fritz's last involvement as a hamstring strain collected when chasing down Robinho in the opening minutes meant he had to be replaced.

Struck back

Real to their credit struck back immediately with Robinho's fine strike on 14 minutes levelling the contest.

The Brazilian was given far too much space down Werder's right-hand side and he ran at the defence before curling a delightful right-footed effort inside Christian Vander's far post.

After a lively opening at the Weserstadion the chances suddenly dried up. Sanogo's tame shot at Casillas' near post was the only action of note in a quiet 20-minute spell.

However, Werder got their act together before half-time to take the lead. Rosenberg's superb run set up the chance with Sanogo's sublime finish putting the home side ahead.

Real nearly levelled matters within seconds of the re-start, but Vander made a fine left-footed block to deny Van Nistelrooy, who appeared to handle in the build-up.

At the other end Casillas and Sergio Ramos somehow managed to keep out Sanogo's goal-bound header, although it was Van Nistelrooy's miss moments later that proved decisive.

No sooner had the Dutch striker failed to find the target from Robinho's cross than the visitors were 3-1 down. A lofted through-ball sent Hunt away and he nudged the ball past the on-rushing Casillas into the empty net.

Real never threw in the towel and set up a grandstand finish when Guti's through-ball sent Van Nistelrooy away. The ex-Man Utd striker took the ball wide but his inch-perfect chip found the back of the net.

Werder had chances to put the game beyond doubt through Naldo and substitute Carlos Alberto, but it mattered not as they won moving them onto six points in Group C, two points behind Real and Olympiakos.
